What was the school thinking?

Yes I do over-react and specially when it is something related to kids, I really do. Here today at BZM I want to put across a question to you?
An extremely popular Delhi preschool recently uploaded their Annual Day pictures, and someone I know on Facebook commented on these pictures, so I thought of browsing through the colorful pictures.
I was not prepared for what I saw a few clicks later. There were 2 pictures of a little boy and girl getting married. I was shocked to see the same.

Do check the pictures here:

What are we teaching/showing our children by doing in a preschool's Annual day function. I did think about it, but I got no answer at all.

What do you think? Am I over-reacting or something.

  1. I totally get what you are saying and no I don't think you are over-reacting. Perhaps in this case it may be an overdose of the saas-bahu serials on TV for the school staff. But in general I don't get the ideology of schools today - branded shoes as part of uniform, a day a week for canteen day where you compulsorily spend pocket money on junk, expensive choreographers for annual day dances, report cards on scrolls instead of plain paper. And then schools have the audacity to say that our children are not growing up grounded. Any wonder why??

  2. Gosh...this is so weird. I understand that it might be part of some skit/act they are playing but aren't they had been taken too far!!
I remember kindergarten kids performing on 'Old McDonald' in a bunch or some rhymes.
I really dread these kind of upmarket school culture!

  3. Hmmm.. We have to teach children everything..weddings from an integral part of Indian culture.. But having said that does it have a shock factor

    1. Marriages are a part of any culture, and I totally believe children should be told about it. This is totally weird and shocking

  5. Teaching wedding rituals and its importance is necessary but to teens and adults i suppose. To make them understand about life ahead. but this ? i feel it is a joke. what do you want to teach the kids ?? really , what was the school and teachers thinking ?

  6. This is so weird. I do not know what to think. I would be totally angry at the teachers for doing something like this. This is not a annual school day theme. You want to do Indian wedding theme... why not do a sangeet or a mehendi ceremony... why the marriage ceremony?

    1. I for one would have never allowed something like this to happen to my daughter. I mean I remember we used to do plays on classics, rhymes or Indian festivals and folktales. I swear why marriage??? Look at the make-up and clothes as well. Poor kids.

  7. I don't think the make up or costumes is out of place. In today's reality shows driven age, a lot of people even train their children from a very young age to walk, talk and behave like adults. Does it work for me? NO! I will not let my son or daughter participate in such shows for a lot of reasons. But when I was 3, and was hailed as a budding star for dancing Bharatnatyam well, I used make up too.

That out of the way, the concept. Well, a marriage theme may not be a terrible concept, but the age is what disturbs me. As pre-schoolers there are tonnes of lovely topics about forests and pets and flowers and Red Riding Hood is fine enough. This topic at this age is certainly not my cup of tea. But it does seem that the school parents are okay about their kid participating... I'd've pulled my son out!
ps: He was a 'caterpillar' in his school day :)
